Dental student from Zimbabwe
On Saturday 6th March a small group of students and grads met together at Michael Burke's house for a BBQ followed by a wonderful time of sharing from Tafadzwa (Taf) Mabheju, a fourth year dental student from Zimbabwe, who told us about her country and what God is doing in her nation after its slow recovery from the Cholera epidemic of 2008. She talked about her involvement in the Christian Medical fellowship Zimbabwe (CMFZ) and Champions for Life, a group who reach out to children living with HIV. It was inspiring to hear how these students work together beyond their daily studies to bringing the Kingdom of God into Healthcare work in Zimbabwe.

Planning for Hope Zimbabwe
After hearing from Taf, we discussed how HealthServe Australia is reaching out to our Zimbabwean brothers through the initiative, ‘Hope Zimbabwe’. Through relationships built with the CMFZ students and Celebration Health, great opportunities for partnership between Australia and Zimbabwe have been opened with plenty of room for those whose hearts are stirred to pray and partner together to see restoration brought to this beautiful nation. We will be sharing more about Hope Zimbabwe at the up at IMPACT.

Champions Camp
The funds that you sent for the camp was the largest offering given  towards it and covered all the costs of food and transport and other logistical details for about 400 children and 200 leaders from all over Zimbabwe to come to Harare for the day camp in December. They were so thankful. The original aim was for the camp to be 3 days, but this was reduced to a one day event. The one day event was jam packed with praise time, singing, dancing, sharing of the Word, small groups, a massive BBQ and prayer time. The core Champions team have recently been in Uganda and Kenya, doing some camps in these areas. I have not heard how this went.

Christmas Cards by Hope Zimbabwe: Order Now!

Thursday, 12 November 2009 17:47

Well folks, Christmas is right around the corner! And while some of you may be frantically facing the end of year blitz, there are glad tidings in the air and generosity being renewed in people's hearts.

HSA's Hope Zimbabwe project is supporting several programs in the country to bring glad tidings to a nation still in the wake of a cholera epidemic.

By purchasing a pack of six Christmas cards at a price $12, your seasons' greetings to old and new friends could carry the added benefit of impacting vulnerable Zimbabwean lives. The funds raised will be divided between three projects which run in partnership with local Christian health professionals; benefiting medical students, HIV youth and local church-based health initiatives.

How it started:

Dear Friends and colleagues,
We have recently received a plea for help to aid in the cholera epidemic of Zimbabwe from the International Christian Medical and Dental Association (ICMDA) Officers. They include the general secretary Dr Daryl Hackland, who is based with the international office in Durban, South Africa and the chairman Prof Peter Ravenscroft, from our own CMDFA fellowship in Newcastle. We would encourage you to please join with us in supporting our colleagues in Zimbabwe. A separate letter received indicates the way that the money would be used to best help them deal with the epidemic. I am sure the money will be used wisely.
Donations which are tax deductible if made to the HealthServe Australia Overseas Aid Fund (Zimbabwe appeal) can be received at our national CMDFA/HSA office and forwarded to our colleagues in need via the ICMDA in East Africa.
I include here the open letter from Dr Daryl Hackland to members of our fellowship in Australia.
Yours in Christian fellowship,
Clifford Smith, Executive Officer

"Dear Australia, We feel sure that you would be happy to know that the ICMDA Officers have launched an appeal in support of the devastating plight of the people of Zimbabwe. The Worldwide media is providing daily updates on a fast deteriorating situation. In response the ICMDA appeal is directed towards enabling students and graduates of the Christian Medical Fellowship to reach out meaningfully to their fellow Zimbabweans in hospitals, at clinics and Cholera treatment centres. They do not have the necessary resources at all to do this at the moment.
We aim also to ensure, with your help, that medical students may continue with their medical studies, once the University Faculty reopens in 2009. It was closed on November 14, 2008. Since its closure the students have been organised into support teams which are reaching out, through Celebration Health (Church based organisation in Harare) in compassionate caring, especially to the rural districts.
The ICMDA website http://www.icmda.net under projects- Zimbabwe appeal - introduces you more fully to the appeal and to the ways in which you can contribute. Please prayerfully share in this ministry of "carrying each others burdens." Please pray daily if you can, for those in Zimbabwe and for a speedy resolution to the political impasse (block) at this time.
God bless you all and thank you
Sincerely in our Saviour and Lord,
Daryl Hackland,
General Secretary, ICMDA"

A letter of appreciation about the funds for cholera in Zimbabwe - 18/3/2009
We deeply appreciate receiving these funds to assist in the urgent need for help with the Zimbabwe Cholera epidemic. ..... this  wonderful initiative in response to the request of Dr Clifford Smith, Executive Officers of HealthServe Australia.  This contribution has swelled the appeal fund significantly and we are most grateful to all in Australia who have made this possible.

Since the launch of the appeal a number of consignments of medical and surgical supplies have been sent to the organisation Celebration Health in Harare, Zimbabwe.  This organisation has been instrumental in opening and running a number of Cholera treatment centres, especially in the far flung rural areas of the country.  These have saved many lives and we have been encouraged that the support provided out of the International Christian Medical and Dental Association appeal fund has placed resources into the hands of the health service providers at these centres.  At the beginning of the epidemic it was devastating to learn that doctors and nurses did not have the resources to manage the cases appropriately and effectively.

The crisis unfortunately still continues and the provision of support from the appeal fund is ongoing.  Once again we thank you for partnering with us in coming alongside the people of Zimbabwe.

Sincerely yours

Daryl
